Today we began our investigation into thermal conductors and thermal insulators. We are planning an investigation to find out what would be the best material to use to make the inner lining of a lunchbox in order to keep our lunch cool.
We had a look at Isabel’s lunchbox and saw that the inside has a shiny, reflective lining. There is also an insulating layer in the middle that we couldn’t see. Finally we found out that Isabel has an ice pack in her lunch box to keep her lunch extra fresh and cool!
We will be testing the following materials next week by wrapping them around ice-cubes and measuring the temperature at different intervals; bubble wrap, blue roll, cotton wool, foil, cardboard, fabric, newspaper and polystyrene. Which material do you think will be the best thermal insulator and why?
