Home Learning 4.5.20

Friday was another fab day of home learning by Class 3, I was wowed by more marvellous medicines, impressed by the food being cooked in the homes of Brandesburton and I felt extremely proud of the lovely writing that came from our Pobble task.

In addition, I must give a big shout out to Pippa and Leo who were fab older siblings helping make FS Pirate Day lots of fun!

As I thought they would, the PE challenges also featured highly in my seesaw newsfeed on Friday! Nancy had an attempt to regain the title of cartwheel queen but could not beat 39 set by Maisie! Nancy, Arthur and Phoebe all attempted Annabelle’s star jump challenge, as did Leo, who used his bed as he didn’t have a trampoline. Arthur scored 59, Leo 48 (it definitely looked trickier on a bed) and Phoebe 68 but it was Nancy who scored the most and is the new leader of the challenge with 69. Can anyone beat Maisie or Nancy?

Finally, a very important piece of news came late on Friday afternoon….Tom has finally lost his first tooth!!!!!! He posted an all important message to show me!

Today’s Challenges

If we had been in school this week, we would have been doing work to celebrate VE Day and 75 years since the end of World War Two in Europe. I plan to still do this and set a range of activities on Wednesday and Thursday for you to complete. I would also love to hear that on Friday you have all had party’s at home to celebrate!

However, before then we need to finish our work on George’s Marvellous Medicine and a few other things…so lets get busy.

EnglishGeorge’s Marvellous Medicine -Today we are going to look at Part 4 of the story (chapters 9-11 ) Have a read/listen to the events and as you read/listen make a list of the different animals that George gives the medicine to – this will be useful for your task.

Your challenge today is to imagine that George and his father have decided to open a ‘Marvellous Farm’ tourist attraction for people to visit the strange animals and Grandma! Imagine a slightly different Honeysuckle Farm! You are in charge of marketing for the farm. You need to design a poster to advertise it or a leaflet with a map to give to visitors. Think carefully what else you would include on the farm to encourage people to visit, for example, a play area.

PE – PLEASE READ COMPUTING AS WELL BEFORE COMPLETING YOUR PE LESSON TODAY – They need to be completed together….

Warm up – The warm up comes from Luke and his PE challenge from last week which practiced his multiplication Skills. Can you invent your own game which can be used to practice your multiplication skills?

Main Session – Can you design an assault course around your garden or house and time yourself to go round it. You could include a balance, a jump, something to climb over, something to crawl under or something to ride on. You may need to draw a plan or a map of your course so you can check it works…Think out of the box – use anything you have in the garden or house!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-5.png

Computing – For our computing work on taking photographs, I would like you to take some photographs of you or a family member ‘in action’. This could be doing something from your assault course, for example – a star jump, running, kicking a ball, throwing a ball in the air – anything that means your body parts are in different directions. Please take some photos, if you can add them to a photo collage and upload them to seesaw – you will need them tomorrow?!!

Have a great day Mrs A

Home Learning 1.5.20

Wow class 3, it’s May already – did you remember to say ‘white rabbits’ when you woke up to bring you luck for the month?

Well done to everyone who posted work yesterday – when I logged in at about 1pm I had 45 posts to approve and another 25 later on! I received maps, videos, maths work, more marvellous medicines and more PE challenges. I loved seeing everything. The Geography challenges were particularly impressive…

I must include these two videos I received, Lachlan and Alasdair not only found out where the food came from, but also learnt how to say ‘hello’ in each country – Mrs C your accents are great!!

I must also share with you Louisa’s reading with expression video because it is simply cool and a little spooky!!

Lots of BIG shout outs today – A big shout out has to go to Thomas who had completed both of yesterday’s tasks by 9am! and then went on to complete many other challenges throughout the day – well done Tom! I must also mention Leo who wanted everyone to know that he had made glue with flour and water – you will have to show us how when we run out of glue sticks Leo!! Also a special mention to Fred who is already turning into an amazing big brother – he made a puppet show for baby Dexter!

Can you all remember Nancy’s cartwheel challenge from PE on Tuesday? Well Nancy, I hate to tell you, but you have been beaten! Maisie has completed 39 cartwheels in a minute!! Can anyone beat Maisie? Nancy do you think you can add more to your score? I can feel a head to head coming on!

Talking of challenges….we have another one…Annabelle would like to challenge Class 3 to her ‘star jumps on a trampoline’ challenge!…Annabelle’s record is 64 star jumps in a minute…can anyone beat that??

Today’s Challenges

I am not going to post too much today, just to give anyone who needs to a chance to catch up. If you haven’t already helped with lunch or tea, you could have a go at that, or maybe offer to get your grown up a cup of tea or a snack – they are all working so hard at home with you at the moment!

Pobble – I thought we would have a Pobble Challenge for the first time in a few weeks.

Before you start writing think about these questions; Who has written the letter? Why have they sent it? Who has received it? Where was it found? Was there more to the letter or was this it? Discuss your ideas with an adult before you start writing. Remember your ideas can be sensible or a little bit silly. For example, it could be a tiny letter from the fairies at the bottom of your garden, a message left on your newest Lego model in the middle of the night or part of a secret love letter from Tom to Annabelle!

Use these ideas to write a story. using this start..

The letter simply said ”Thank you’….

Remember to write for about 20 minutes. No more, it needs to be a short story based on what you think the picture is about.

Grammar – As we normally do on Friday in class, I have set a short grammar/language activity. After our fab acting and reading with expression, I thought we would see if we could put some of this emotion into our writing. Can you make the sentences more interesting? Please write your sentences into your home learning book or onto paper to give you a chance to practice your handwriting.

Friday Treat – Like last week’s movie treat, I wanted to set you another reward for all your hard work. So, today or over the weekend, I want to see some fab photos of your daily exercise. It could be a photo of the beautiful scenery around Brandesburton or a photo showing me how you have been getting around. I’ve been going out on my scooter quite a bit but I think this weekend I might get my roller blades out – I hope I can remember how to do it! So have the afternoon off and get outside! (Weather permitting!)

If the weather is rubbish, your treat is to play a game with your family. What are your favourites? We currently like happy families, dobble and grabalo. However yesterday we had lots of fun with a simple game of snakes and ladders. Send me some photos of new game suggestions for my girls.

Have fun, see you here on Monday! x

Home Learning 30.4.20

Well done to everyone who completed yesterday’s challenges it was lovely to see your wellbeing scavenger hunt ideas and hear some of you reading with expression. There was also some fab acting going on and even some dressing up!!

Here are a few of the videos I received, some of your scavenger hunt photos and other learning that took place..

At my house, we spent the day planting seeds and finding out about how plants grow. We ended the day with some artwork and made this wreath for the front door (its made with card and an egg box!) – maybe you could make something similar over the weekend to go with the rainbow picture you might have in your window, or maybe make a new rainbow picture to give people something different to look at on their daily walks.

Today’s Challenges

Maths – Today we are going to move onto adding fractions. In Year 3 we only need to add fractions with the same denominator. Have a look at the video below (wk com 27th April – Lesson 1 – Adding Fractions) which explains how we do this. When you have had a listen, try the worksheet attached on seesaw (answers on the below link too)

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

Geography – As part of our work on food and healthy eating we are going to look at where food comes from. With permission from a grown up, your task is to RAID THE FRIDGE and CUPBOARDS! You are not required to eat anything but I would like you to look closely at where the food comes from. If you don’t have much food in the cupboards, see if you can use the internet to find out what countries different foods come from. Can you create a list, map, photo collage or poster to show whereabouts in the world some different food comes from? There is a world map template on seesaw if needed.

Have a good day Mrs A

Home Learning 29.4.20

I must start by mentioning the amazing video that Mrs L forwarded to me yesterday – well done it was lovely to see all your smiling faces and fab messages!! I miss you all too!!

A review of Tuesday – Another fab day of learning Class 3. Well done to those who caught up with yesterday’s challenges, those who did some cooking and those who tackled some tricky Maths. It certainly looked like you enjoyed fractions websites to consolidate some of our learning – well done.

The PE challenge made me smile, in the gardens of class 3 yesterday there was circuit training, throwing, rugby ball catching, cartwheels, penguin walks and even a dangerous activity involving having a bowl on your head!! A big shout out the the Douglas Crew who all got involved!! I will continue to share your ideas in our PE lessons – maybe when we are back at school we can play one video after the other on the big screen in the hall and have a crazy, varied PE session!

Below are some screen shots of the different videos I received…

I must share this video with you though…Nancy, your cartwheeling is simply amazing….37 cartwheels in a minute…can anyone beat it?

Living Museum Answers

Well done to those who had another go at the photo guessing….Olivia you were SOOOOO close with your guesses…here are the official answers….I’m sure you will all agree it was lovely to see everyone’s treasured items…How many did you get correct?

Yesterday I also received two more photos of ‘special’ items to share with you from Rosie and Thomas. I love the way Thomas has annotated his photos to explain why they are special.

Today’s Challenges

English – We are not going to read/watch anymore of the story today but have a look at using expression when reading. Rik Mayall does this brilliantly so I thought we could ‘magpie’ some of his strategies and have a go at performing with expression ourselves. Enjoy listening to him read a section of it and then choose your own section to try out.

If you have a copy of the book you can choose any section of the story, if not I have uploaded some extracts to seesaw or you can read some of the story using the link below.

You do not need to read lots, just a section

https://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/children/2017/george-s-marvellous-medicine-by-roald-dahl-extract/

Can you read your chosen section using expression, practice using different voices before performing your extract to someone at home. You may even wish to add in props, costumes and sound effects for a full on performance!

Just choose part of the extract to concentrate on performing!
Just in case you want to get very serious with your performance – this template may be useful!

Wellbeing – As it is Wednesday again, I thought we would have some more wellbeing. Can you complete my wellbeing scavenger hunt? It might be nice to complete it with someone else from your family so you can discuss the different items that you choose.

We have a similar scavenger hunt card game at our house and is always interesting to see the random things that the girls choose! If you wish to upload a photo of your items I will share some on the blog. Have fun and remember to think out of the box!!

Stay Safe Mrs A

Home Learning 28.4.20

Wow! Wow! Wow! So much amazing work class 3! I was seriously impressed each time I went on seesaw yesterday….10 Class dojo points for everyone!!!

So, please bear with me while you scroll through all the fab learning that took place yesterday….Today’s tasks are down there somewhere!

Due to all those photos I will leave the ‘living museum’ answers until tomorrow. If you want one more chance have a look back through the blog posts to try again – no one has them all correct yet! As a clue, the following children submitted photos – Lucy, Nancy, Freddie, Annabelle, Arthur, Reuben, Pippa, Maisie, Leo, Jack, Lachlan, James C, Olivia, Lacey, Zak, Flossie and Belle. Feel free to upload a second set of answers!

Today’s Challenges

Spelling – Well done to everyone who completed last week’s spelling game on purple mash. This week’s spelling pattern looks at the ending ‘ure’ for example treasure, enclosure

Maths – To continue our work on fractions from last week, today you have a game to play and some websites to explore. I have attached the game as a template on seesaw. Please print and cut out or write the fractions on pieces of paper. Can you match the equivalent fractions? Remember to use the fraction wall to help if needed or draw the fractions as slices of a pizza to see if they are the same. When you have played it to find equivalent fractions, can you play matching pairs again but this time find fractions that make a whole – for example 1/4+3/4=1 – Do you have all cards needed to match them all up?

Why not try a couple of the following websites for some more fraction fun…(can fractions actually be fun!!??)

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/fraction-matcher/latest/fraction-matcher_en.html

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/fractions-intro/latest/fractions-intro_en.html

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/fractions-equality/latest/fractions-equality_en.html

http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L155/L155/index.html

PE – Today’s PE challenge comes from Arthur…last week he sent me this…can you create something similar with a ball to try at home? How could you alter Arthur’s challenge to make it easier or harder? What challenge could you invent in your garden or living room? Can you get all your family involved? Who gets the highest score? Send me some photos or short videos (shorter means I can upload more) Have fun as a family getting physical!

Have fun Mrs A.

Home Learning 27.4.20

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and that you are all back ready for some more fun home learning. I was looking through all of last week’s work and both you and your grown-ups should be very proud.

Friday saw more hard work, marvellous medicines (including one with chicken poo!!!), baking and movies being enjoyed.

Before we get started on today’s tasks – there are three more ‘living museum’ photos to guess…who do you think these belong to? I will post all the answers tomorrow so you can see how well you know your friends!

As it is Monday again, I would like to set another food/recipe challenge. Well done to the people who tried out the recipes or shared their own with me last week, I will definitely be trying out some of them soon!

This week, your challenge is inspired by Leo who helped to make tea last week…can you help out at tea time or make your own lunch one day? Post your photos to show me how you get on!

Today’s Challenges

English – Last week we looked at Chapters 1-6 of George’s Marvellous Medicine, now it is time for some more. If you have not read the story before, take some time to make a prediction…what do you think will happen when Grandma drinks some medicine? Discuss your ideas with a grown up and then read (chapters 7 and 8)/watch/listen to see what happens….

Wow! Is that what you predicted?

I am going to give you a choice of challenges today…(you are welcome to do both if you can’t choose!!) 1. Draw a large bottle of medicine. Collect adjectives and expanded noun phrases that describe the medicine and its effects on Grandma, writing them inside your bottle. 2. Using the website https://ifaketextmessage.com/ Create a text message conversation between George and his Mum to explain what George has done to Grandma. If on a tablet, the site site works best holding it in landscape. Type each message into the left hand side and it will appear in the phone outline. Remember to change over the message colour so you can tell who is texting. Click +addtextmessage to add another message. When all the conversation is complete, click ‘create image’ and then ‘download image’ to save it somewhere on your device. Hopefully you can then upload your phone outline to seesaw.

Science – Looking at last week’s Science work, I could see you clearly know lots of parts of the body, so now it is time to find out how some of them work. Starting with our skeleton….your challenge today is to create a poster to explain why our skeleton is so important. Can you explain which bones protect which organs? Can you include any facts about which bones are biggest and smallest? Remember to include interesting facts, diagrams and pictures?

This video may be a useful starting point….

Have a great day. I look forward to seeing your uploads Mrs A

Home Learning 24.4.20

Well class 3, we have got to Friday and we can tick off another fab week of home learning. You really have been so busy and have achieved so much. Yesterday I was treated to more fitness routines, more marvellous medicines, amazing work linked to fractions and more yummy recipes!

Today’s Challenges

As it is Friday, I am only going to set two small challenges today, this will give people a chance to catch up with any unfinished activities and be ready to start again on Monday morning.

English – Grammar and Punctuation – As we often do on a Friday morning, I thought I would set a little grammar and punctuation activity. Can you find the mistakes in Professor Fizz’s writing? Use the symbols on the right hand side to correct his work then choose one paragraph to write again correctly – Please write it in you home learning book or on paper and then upload a photograph to seesaw so you can show me your neatest joined handwriting. (Template saved on Seesaw)

Maths – Fractions – I have set two fraction games as 2dos on Purple Mash – have a go at them – one is the fraction pizza game that everyone likes!

If after these two activities, you have completed most things for the week, I have a special mission for you….you need to go into your living room, grab a blanket, snuggle down under it and WATCH A MOVIE! Let me know what you watch and feel free to send me some recommendations.

Have a fab weekend, play outside, be kind to each other and stay home and safe. Mrs A x

PARENTS – Please feel free to email me with any feedback, suggestions or questions. This week, I have tried to create activities that we would be completing in school so that the children’s learning can continue. If I am honest, I have found this tricky at times as I am not physically ‘teaching’ the work but I am hoping it has worked in some way. Seesaw is still very new to me but I hope it is proving a useful tool to communicate with each other! I am really impressed with all the work that is being completed and am loving seeing the fab ways you are all approaching it. Please do not worry if one day does not go as you plan or activities do not go as you hoped. My girls were both still in pjs at 11am yesterday morning but they were playing TOGETHER so nicely it seemed a shame to disturb them! Remember to make memories as well!! class3brandesburton@gmail.com

P.S. If you are bored over the weekend and fancy a bit of fun, try out Clare from Dancestars 80s Dance Session – we did it the other weekend and had lots of laughs!! https://vimeo.com/user109836250 If you enjoy Clare’s sessions, she is currently offering online sessions for £15 a month. I can provide details if anyone wants to look into it further. Just email me.

BREAKING NEWS….FREDDIE IS A BIG BROTHER!!!!!!

Class 3 meet Dexter….Awww!! Congratulations!! That is the best photo ever Fred! I am sure you will all join me in wishing Freddie and all his family best wishes – enjoy guys!!

So while Freddie was enjoying being a big brother, there was another fab day of learning in Class 3 – I have been amazed by the medicines, puzzled by the photographs and impressed with your cookery skills. Here is just a snippet of the fun that has been taking place in the houses of Brandesburton! (Well the ones with Class 3 children in them!)

A big shout out to Olivia and Pippa (assisted by Libby) – who produced brilliant videos to go with their instructions – I wonder how many people will try your coronavirus cure Pippa!

Thanks to everyone who also caught up with tasks from earlier in the week and got busy with some baking – Liam I hope you enjoyed my Mars Bar Crispie Tray Bake, Zak your muffins looked yummy, Lachlan I hope the brownies tasted as good as always, Lucy your buns looked great and Leo well done on peeling the potatoes for tea. I think by the end of Lockdown you will all be pinching Mrs Gell’s and Ms Tomlinson’s jobs!

Today’s Challenges

1.Maths – I am really impressed with what I have seen linked to equivalent fractions, I have uploaded some more activities for you to try out. You can complete as many as you like – it is all good practice. It may be useful to look back on your posts to the fraction wall to help you if needed.

PARENTS – If you are wanting more help with explaining equivalent fractions, the following website has little videos to watch. There are 3 equivalent fraction lessons – one in week 2 lesson 5 and two in week commencing 20th April. I have attached some of the worksheets from this site to seesaw (answers can be found on the link too if needed!)

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

2.Wellbeing Follow Up – How well do you know your classmates? – Thanks for all your photographs, it was lovely to see all your precious items. Now it is time to see if you can guess whose is whose? I have made all the photos I received yesterday into big piccolleges and numbered them. Can you work out whose items belong to who? Submit your answers onto the template on seesaw and I will see who gets the most correct!

If you didn’t manage to get your photos uploaded yesterday, I will include a second round of the photos tomorrow so please upload some photos today.

Music – As you may be aware, BBC Bitesize has launched a new set of resources to support schools and children during Lockdown. I thought it would be good to try some of it out. Let me know what you think. Here is the link for today’s music lesson!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z7f72sg

Feel free to explore some more of the site if you want to. Let me know if you find anything fun!

Home Learning 22.4.20

Another fab day of learning yesterday, well done guys! I must start with a big shout out to Maisie, Nancy and Arthur who were the first people to get busy in the kitchen with the recipe challenge. Well done, your pizzas looked very yummy! (Well done to George as well – looks like you had pepperoni!)

I was also very impressed with the fraction work I saw. It looked like you remembered lots from before Easter – well done.

I hope you enjoyed our PE sessions. It looked like you did from the photos!

Well done to those who took it a step further and designed their own workouts! In case you feel the need for some more fitness, below is some workouts from members of Class 3!

Today’s Challenges

1.English – Time for some more of George’s Marvellous Medicine…Read Chapter 3 (George begins to make the medicine) to the end of Chapter 6 (brown paint) or listen to the next part below….

This is my favourite part when George makes the medicine, I love all the different things he adds and the different verbs Roald Dahl uses to explain what George is doing!

Your task today is to design your own marvellous medicine! Can you use some amazing adjectives to explain the different items you would add? Can you include some adverbs to tell me how to add the different ingredients? You could complete this as a set of instructions, a list of ingredients, a drawing of the massive bottle or saucepan with pictures and labels of everything you would put in, or even a video of you pretending to make the medicine and telling everyone what you are adding and how – the choice is yours! I can’t wait to see your creations!

I have added some templates and wordbanks to seesaw which you may wish to use.

2.Wellbeing – After last term’s success of Wellbeing Wednesday – I thought I would bring it back. However, today’s task also links to our Computing unit. Can you create your own ‘living museum’? Your challenge is to find 3 or 4 items that are important to you and take photographs of them. You could display the items together and take one photograph or maybe take photos of each item and then use a photo collage app (such as pic collage) to create a picture. I will upload some tomorrow and then your challenge will be to guess who the items belong to – how well do you know your friends??!

Have fun, check back tomorrow to see who was busy posting work!

Home Learning 21.4.20

A massive well done to everyone who was busy with the blog tasks yesterday…every time I logged onto seesaw I was greeted with many new posts – it was great to see…here are a few examples of the two tasks…

As you can see some absolutely brilliant learning has taken place! I love Freddie’s hairy legs on grandma and Reuben’s fab drawing. Well done to Pippa and Leo who turned their labelling into a video. Also a big shout out to Lachlan who learnt some body parts in French aswell and also to Oliver and Louisa who posted all the things that they had been busy with over the holidays.

Recipe Challenge Update – After seeing what I had posted on the blog yesterday, Maisie and Matilda wanted to do some baking…we didn’t have all the ingredients at home for the recipes I posted so, as I suggested yesterday, we chose one of our own….mars bar traybake, it was very yummy! Feel free to post any recipe you try out…we could even end up with Class 3’s Lockdown Recipe Book by the end!

Today’s Challenges

Spelling – I have added this weeks spelling pattern to Purple Mash. This week our focus is the prefix ‘re’ for example, return, recycle, review etc.

Maths – If we had been in school this week, we would have been starting a unit looking at Equivalent Fractions. When we did fractions in Spring Term, you impressed me so much so we are going to try and build on this at home!

Your challenge today is to explore equivalent fractions. I have added details to an activity on seesaw.

Can you use some things at home to show some equivalent fractions? Lego, playdough or even food may be useful. How many equivalent fractions can you find? You may wish to use the fraction wall to help, can you cut it up and see which fractions are equal?

2/6 = 1/3 3/6 = 1/2. 4/6 = 2/3

PARENTS – Please let me know how you get on with this and using the teaching file. Obviously in class I would do lots of talking and questioning linked to the concept – which is difficult to show on a screen!

PE – In PE, to link to our healthy lifestyles work, I thought it would be fun to create our own workouts!

So, like we often do in English, we need to start by ‘magpie-ing’ some ideas…can you complete one of the workouts below….get everyone at home involved and post some photos to show me how much fun you had! (if you are feeling really energetic – try both – which did you like best?)

Can you work out the 3 main parts of the lesson?

Clear back the sofa and get active!!
